Workshop 1 - Growing Capacity in Assam

An overview of on-going collaborative research between the Government of Assam and The University of Melbourne.

The Growing Capacity in Assam workshop took place at Assam Engineering College (Jalukbari, Guwahati, Assam) during 12-16 December 2016.

Construction management

In collaboration with the Government of Assam and The University of Melbourne, a cutting edge professional course in Construction Management is being developed at the Assam Engineering College, under the leadership of Dr Atul Bora. The program was officially launched by the Honorable Minister for Education, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and a series of lectures covering core knowledge areas were delivered by the subject matter experts from the University of Melbourne, Assam Engineering College and IIT Guwahati.

Industry workshop

Interested stakeholders were invited to explore opportunities for creating affordable, sustainable, context specific housing in the Smart Village context. Hands-on workshops were conducted to assist in defining an appropriate house type and configuration, sufficiently flexible to meet the future needs of Assamese villagers.

Research workshop

This workshop provided an overview of on-going collaborative research between the Government of Assam and The University of Melbourne. This research explored the socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of Assamese villages as well as local capabilities, and resource availability, in order to build local capacity for creating Smart Villages.
